Description

In my last meeting with Nabeshin (late 2007), we engaged in something of a "drawing contest" in which he beat me as recounted in my journal entry at the time [link] so I vowed that the next time I met him I would provide a devastating counterattack, and here it is.
When it was my turn to see him during his autograph session at a recent anime convention, I wanted to remind him of last time but I was unsure of the etiquitte... That is, I wasn't sure if in the kind of situation where neither party speaks the same language and one of them has a translator, do you speak addressing the person you wish to speak to or their interpreter? The last time I got his autograph, I didn't really speak to him, I just made an indirect comment that the interpreter shared with him.
I decided that perhaps it was more polite to address Nabeshin himself and let the interpreter speak for me rather than speak to the interpreter what I mean to say to Nabeshin... Saying stuff to his translator like, "Oh, say this to him" or "Tell him that" sounds kind of rude, like you are talking over someone, right? Well, I think so.
The translator let me talk for a bit without saying anything in Japanese, which worried me, because I knew Nabeshin had NO idea what I was saying! Still, he was very polite and friendly and looked as if he was paying very close attention to everything I said, even though he didn't get a word of it!
I reminded him of our last meeting and presented to him my "counterattack". As soon as he saw this drawing, he blurted out "KAKKOII! KAKKOII!" And everyone within the proximity leaned in to get a look at my drawing (so proud! <3). One of his scriptwriters was a fellow guest -- she was seated at the adjacent table -- and she gleefully pointed out my use of bubbles for effect (lol). Nabeshin took out his camera and took a photo of it... I was actually going to give the drawing to him, that's why I scanned it (which is what you see here), but he was kind enough to sign it for me whilst keeping a "copy" for himself. Nabeshin, through his translator, said that this was his "official portrait", then, "You may now touch my afro."
AND I DID.

Oh God lol, this is what you gave to him! That's the best. I could picture it in my head when you described it, but it's better seeing it X3
